Is hayfever making you drowsy? Halt symptoms and side-effects
Sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, streaming eyes - hayfever symptoms are no fun. It’s a mad dash to the pharmacy for many. And while anti-histamines, steroid nasal sprays and other over-the-counter remedies may work in the short-term, there are often horrible side effects - drowsiness and brain fog for starters and potentially worse over the long-term.
If you want to avoid these uncomfortable side effects, and find a longer-lasting solution, it’s worth looking at natural or holistic treatments for hayfever (also known as allergic rhinitis). In kinesiology, we consider the whole person – and treat the root causes – rather than just the symptoms.
Sneezing, itching and other allergic reactions occur when histamine is released in the body. This is because the immune system perceives a threat. However, in some cases, the immune system over-reacts to a harmless substance, such as pollen.
It may sound odd, but restoring and improving gut health is an important way to help reduce allergic reactions. This is because a large part of the immune system functions in the gut. The benefits of restoring gut health extend far beyond reducing allergic reactions too. Treating any health issue at the root will help to prevent it returning and support overall wellbeing.
Mother nature also has a slew of natural anti-histamines available, such as garlic, ginger and turmeric. These can provide safe and effective solutions to allergy symptoms. Supplements can be hugely beneficial too. Those we would test in a tailored kinesiology treatment – include Vitamin C, Quercetin, Spirulina, Zinc, Selenium, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Omega 3s, Aller-G Formula, and Pre & Probiotics.
We would look to support mucosal tissue and epithelial lining with nutrients and herbs too. However, rather than guesswork, in kinesiology, we use specific muscle testing to find what your body needs. This may be different to someone else who has the same symptoms.
Reducing foods that contain (or increase) histamine in the body, such as wine, beer, processed meats (salami, ham, sausages etc), canned fish and aged cheeses can also help. (This may not sound fun, but it is usually just for a short while). Again we can test to see if something you consume regularly is causing an issue. As pesky as histamine can be, it is essential to the body, so if you want to fully embrace a low-histamine diet, it is best done with the guidance of a professional.
Of course, with a bespoke kinesiology treatment, you can take out the guess work and find out exactly which nutrients and healing your body needs.
