Is hayfever making you drowsy? Discover how to stay alert
Sneezing, runny nose, itchy throat, streaming eyes - hayfever symptoms are no fun. It’s a mad dash to the pharmacy for many. And while anti-histamines, steroid nasal sprays and other over-the-counter remedies may work in the short-term, there are often horrible side effects - drowsiness and brain fog for starters and potentially worse over the long-term.
If you want to avoid any of these nasty side effects, and find a longer-lasting solution, it’s worth looking at natural treatments for hayfever (also known as allergic rhinitis), such as kinesiology. The tools and techniques we use in kinesiology sessions consider the whole person, and treat the root causes, rather than just the symptoms in isolation.
Sneezing, itching and other allergic reactions occurs when histamine is released in the body. This is because the immune system perceives a threat. However, in the case of hayfever, the immune system over-reacts to a harmless substance, such as pollen.
As weird as it sounds, restoring and improving gut health is one way to help reduce allergic reactions, as a large part of the immune system functions in the gut. The benefits of this extend far beyond reducing allergic reactions too. Treating any health issue at the root will help to prevent it returning.
Mother nature also has a slew of natural anti-histamines available, which can provide safe and effective solutions to hayfever symptoms, such as garlic, ginger and turmeric. Supplements can be hugely beneficial too. Those recommended by Cytoplan’s resident nutritional therapists include Vitamin C, Quercetin, Spirulina, Vitamin D, Omega 3s, Aller-G Formula, and Pre & Probiotics.
Reducing foods that contain or increase histamine in the body, such as wine, beer, processed meats (salami, ham, sausages etc), canned fish and aged cheeses can also help. (I get that the latter doesn’t sound like much fun, but it is usually just for a short while). As pesky as histamine can be, it is essential to the body, so if you want to fully embrace a low-histamine diet, it is best done with the guidance of a professional.
Of course, with a bespoke kinesiology treatment, you can take out the guess work and find out exactly which nutrients and healing your body needs.
