How kinesiology can support you through menopause

Discover the ways kinesiology can help you to navigate menopause naturally, from peri to post

We’ve become used to a ‘pill for an ill’ mentality in conventional western medicine – and it can work for many ailments, for a while. However, it doesn’t work for everything. Some people also prefer not to take long-term medication, due to the potential unwelcome side-effects. If you are in the latter camp, you may have decided that HRT isn’t for you. You may also be wondering how to cope with the hot flushes, brain fog, anxiety, poor sleep, memory loss and other symptoms that may have arrived with the onset of peri-menopause. The good news is there are natural solutions-you don’t have to struggle through unaided.

Many younger women dread menopause, I know I did. All we hear about in the media is the bad stuff, and it can feel like there’s not much to look forward to. Yet menopause is actually a transition to a new and exciting part of life. We wouldn’t dream of preventing puberty, because it’s uncomfortable. We let children go through the discomfort, whether it’s mood swings, emotional sensitivity or spots, knowing they will be fine ‘on the other side’, when they reach adulthood. Peri-menopause is not dis-similar, in that it’s another transition, brought about by hormonal changes. In fact, in China menopause is called ‘The Second Spring’ in recognition that it leads to a new phase of a woman’s life. It can be uncomfortable or confusing to go through, but we eventually reach ‘the other side’. (I realise some women find peri-menopause completely debilitating and just want the symptoms to stop, so if meds work for them, that’s great). But many women don’t want to be medicated and are looking for more holistic ways to pass through this entirely natural life stage. Others may want to come off of HRT but are understandably fearful that their symptoms may return. Kinesiology can support your body through peri and post menopause, whatever your choices.

There are many reasons why we experience uncomfortable menopausal symptoms: from the amount of xeno-oestrogens that we are exposed to in beauty products, plastics and pesticides, to the high stress many are now under and the poor lifestyle choices that stress can lead to, such as drinking, smoking, sugary snacks or junk food.

However, kinesiology can be an effective way to support your body through menopause, from peri to post. Firstly, there are a plethora of herbal remedies that can ease symptoms. Yet rather than guessing whether to take Black Cohosh, Agnus Castus, Red Clover or any of the many other wonderful herbs - or medicinal mushrooms - available, a kinesiologist can find the one your body responds to.

It’s likely that your body needs extra nutritional support, even if you are eating healthily (fruit and vegetables contain significantly less vitamins and minerals compared to 90-years ago, due to the depletion of soil quality in intensive farming methods). The liver and adrenal glands particularly need extra support during this life-stage. Blood-sugar spikes affect hormones, so may need to be addressed. Mid-life women also require twice as much protein as when they were younger. A kinesiology session can identify which nutrients your body requires. It can also help to reduce cravings for habits that would be beneficial to let go of, such as excess alcohol or sugar, through stress release techniques and nutritional support.

Another aspect ignored by conventional medicine is the emotional side of menopause. The loss of fertility can have a huge impact on a woman and her identity, leading to mood swings, grief or depression. We also live in a youth-obsessed society, where elders can feel written off. This can be acknowledged, processed (and gently challenged if need be) in a kinesiology treatment. Once acceptance is achieved and symptoms alleviated, the client is then free to look forward to the next exciting chapter of her life - her second spring.
